I probably will not be able to attend the celebration this summer, but am hoping things might work out. Memorials given in honor of my mother, Shirley Bentzinger, were used, along with those from Dorothy Smith, were used to build the new campfire.
My mother, Shirley Bentzinger, spent her summers up at Cathedral Pines as her Dad, Rev. Jewell Hugh spent the summers working as the camp pastor. The family lived in the little registration building that stood just across the bridge as you entered the Camp. She originally submitted the name 'Cathedral in the Pines'. That name was selected, but it was shortened to Cathedral Pines.
I attended church camp every summer until I graduated high school, as did my daughter. Many memories of rising early and walking to the dining hall to get the bucket of water for our cabin. Man was that water cold! The generator was turned off at 10:00 PM so of course it was lights out. Each day we walked to Easley's to swim for a couple of hours and take a shower.
Probably the most special time of each camp was camp fire. Back when I attended camp, the campfire area was just across the bridge and we looked out at Boulder Mt. That is where I publicly asked Christ into my heart and my life, as did many, many people.
My family went up every fall and helped put the camp 'to bed' for the winter, and again in the spring to get things ready for the busy camping season.
